New Battery and bike wont start

I just got back for my R&R from Iraq and I just installed a new battery. The bike will turn but wont start. The fuel light is blinking and there is a full tank of gas.

I never unplugged it. I just tried to start it again and it will turn but wont start. When I sit there I smell a small hint something burnt, like wire or plastic.

bump this. just replaced my battery too and it wont start. recently the thing wouldnt charge on its own. the guages would barely illuminate. i had put jumpers on it, it would run until i removed the cables. now the guages illuminate fine, it cranks but doesnt turn over.
i check all the fuses (under the seat) and everything is fine. HELP!!!
