Shark Guards from GB Racing – protect your feet from injury!

Protect your toes from getting caught between the swingarm and rear sprocket with a shark guard from GB Racing components. This simple-to-install device could literally be the difference between a minor crash from which you get up and ride away or major surgery to repair mangled or missing toes. This is cheap insurance for any motorcyclist! Some bikes even come equipped with bungs for attaching a chain guard while others require drilling and tapping the swingarm to install. Made from the same long glass filled nylon as used in other GB Racing components, this shark guard is strong, very rigid but still surprisingly light.

Unlike shark guards from other manufacturers, GB Racing has added a “fin” to the aft-facing side of their unit so that it can be mounted even closer to the drive sprocket. This increases safety without getting in the way of most common paddock stands or swingarm sliders.

All required hardware is included with each GB shark guard. For models already equipped with bungs for attachment, GB produces exact-fit models that require no drilling or tapping of the swingarm to install.


We installed a GB toe guard on our Daytona 675 project bike. Notice how the fin on the aft side lays very close to the chainwheel to provide the best protection possible.

We used a crashed and rashed swingarm from a GSXR600 to do this installation guide. Obviously, unlike the illustrations below, you’ll be working on the bottom side of the swingarm to do this. As always, the basic rules of a custom installation apply: use the right tools, and measure at least twice before drilling any holes. For the semi-proficient, this installation would probably take less than fifteen minutes.

What you need:
- 6 x 1.0 tap
- Tap magic or some other form of thread lubricant to cut the threads
- Electric drill, cordless preferred
- 5mm metal drill bit
- Center punch and hammer
- Sharpie to mark where you’re going to drill
- 5mm hex key
- Loctite
- Tape to hold the mounting bracket in place for cutting marks

You want to assemble the shark guard as it will be installed on the bike to mark its place on the swingarm. You must position it no closer than 5mm from the chain to prevent it from rubbing against and damaging the toe guard. Once you have found an ideal location, remove the shark fin and tape the bracket to the swingarm. Use a Sharpie to mark the holes you will need to cut. Next, take a center punch to precisely mark exactly where you will need to drill. If you need a little extra working room, don’t be afraid to remove the rear wheel AFTER you have properly marked the position of the toe guard on the swingarm.


Using a 5mm drill, bore the required holes into the swingarm.


Tap the swing arm to accept 6mm x 1mm bolts.

If you got everything right, the mounting bracket should line up perfectly over the holes in the swingarm.


Attach the bracket to the swingarm and don’t be afraid to use Loctite to hold the bolts in place.


Attach the shark guard itself and your feet are now much safer!
