I just picked up a very nice 06 636 for the girlfriend (she loves the red rims but hates the flames which we are removing) and I am wondering if anyone is also a member of a good 6R forum? I found a few out there but it’s hard to tell if anyone on there actually knows their stuff.
We are looking at exhausts but it seems the exhaust valve is welded to the muffler. Aside from custom work does anyone know of an aftermarket system that retains the exhaust valve? I would like to keep the power smooth but let the bike be heard. We are also looking for flush "euro" signals if anyone knows a good place for those. Thanks in advance! ![]() ![]() ![]()

I have a Yosh. slip on RS-5. The thing sounds better than some 1000s. My 10 with a Arko is quiet beside it. Really nice pipe. Best fourm is the one your on just go to the 600 section.
Free mod is the jumper mod take about 10 min. look in the how-to or do a search for "jumper mod". Cycle Gear can order the euros for you 29.99 each. Other than that just ride. OH yeah maybe a Intergrated rear light for the back blinkers they make the rear look sweet. Good luck on the ladie riding mine didnt like it, so her 636 became my bitch bike. Lots of stoppies, wheelies, and track riding. They hold up pretty damn good. |

Thanks for all the info. I also made a post about the jumper mod. I was a little disheartened when I took the bike out yesterday to warm it up and change the oil. I was riding it super easy to let it warm up for about ten minutes then there was a nice straight so I took it up to about 12-13K and it started ticking like crazy. It ticked all the way home and continued ticking each time I started it up after I got home. I had a friend come over and bring some conventional oil since I wanted to change it but I figured it would not be in there for long with the service I assume I need. While I was letting it warm back up the fans kicked in at about 200 degrees and then a few minutes later the sound just went away. I changed the oil and took it out again and I have not been able to replicate the noise since it went away after it warmed up. I’m going to take it out the next dry day we get and see if it comes back. My initial thoughts are a valve lash and/or a cam tensioner issue? What do you think?

I wouldn't worry about removing the exhaust servo and valve. I had a 2005 636 with an Akrapovic slip on and it was just as smooth with it out as when it was stock. The Akra exhaust came with a stopper to put on the servo to trick the ECU and keep the FI light off. The Akra sounded amazing on that bike. As far as the forum goes, the ZX-6R section of this site is great. Kawiforum is ok too, but everything you need should be on here. Also, did you check with the sponsors on this site to see if they can get you 636 parts too?

...the tick sounds like a pretty classic cam chain tensioner noise to me. There are a couple "tricks" to trying to get one to self-adjust, or you can just remove it, clean it, and reinstall it. Just about every Kawi I've run developes cam chain noise once or twice, heheh.

Tricks like rolling it in gear and then popping the clutch with the motor off? Does cleaning it do the trick or should I just replace it? If all it needed was a good cleaning then the oil change may have taken care of that.

One more thing... As for the ticking, 636's get kinda loud. When my 636 got stolen it had a little over 26k miles on it. It ticked from about 12k on, but still pulled just as hard as the day I got it. It ran like a champ right up until the day it got stolen, and all I ever did was change the oil, changed the coolant once, and changed the spark plugs at about 20k. That is one bullet proof bike...

I am going to wait and see if the noise comes back (it did not last night when I ran it in the garage). If I don’t hear it again I guess I’ll just follow the scheduled maintenance and check the valves at 15K (I’m at 6K now). Thanks for your help.
