It is the same on my 06 zx10 it is easy and only drips a little on the header.
And the same on her old 03 636, very easy to change.
But on the 08 the filter wrench "Just" fits in there to get the filter out.
Next change I will be using a KN oil filter with the nut on the end of the filter.

IMO the factory oil filters are best for the bike. I have an 08 and it's easy to get the filter out.

Here's how I do it:

Set the bike up on the rear stand // Take off the bottom left cowling. The one that's held on by 3 allen bolts up front and a bracket close to the rear wheel // Next, take the one larger allen bolt from the left mid fairing closest to the radiator/header vent // Drain the oil // Take the oil filter cap and tap it on the oil filter (After moving the mid fairing a bit) // Take a 3-inch extension attached to a 3/8 drive and attach it to the oil filter cap // Place a terry towel flat in between the oil filter and the oil filter shield. // Loosen a good bit but don't take it off! // Soak up the excess oil before it drips out // Once there is no oil seeping below the oil filter it's safe to take off // BAM it's off and fill the new one with about a 1/4 full of oil. // Torque the new filter to 23 FT LBS with a torque wrench. // Torque the drain bolt to 22 FT LBS // Unscrew the fill plug // Add oil // Leave oil fill plug open until the engine oil light turns off // Screw oil filler cap back on and watch for leaks for a minute or two // Turn off bike // Put your lower fairing back on and screw that one allen bolt back on the left mid fairing // You're DONE!

This takes me about 30 minutes to do it carefully because I'm a neat freak but I'm getting faster!

Yes, the oil filter on teh 07/08 is above the lower half of the motor. I am really unhappy with that design.

Don't know about the 08 yet but my 06 is easy. I just put some aluminum foil over the headers and the oil spills on to the foil and into the drain pain. Then just remove and fold foil up the foil and no mess.

Trust me... it isn't that easy with the 07/08. Look where your counter sprocket cover is on your 06. Now look about 3 inches above that and forward about 4 inches. That's where the gawd damn filter is for the 07/08. Half way up the side of the side of the motor. Oil changes guarantee you will make a mess. Even if you're super careful, your gonna spill some.

Don't forget that stupid plastic drain pan around the filter.
The thing is just the right size to block the oil filter socket tool from going over the filter.
I had to take this off to get the filter off..
I think this is one of the worse filter changes that I have done.
